"I would have chopped her into mincemeat and made sausages of her, and then I should have been satisfied."

William Harris, hanged in Warwick in 1894 for the murder of his girlfriend, Florence Clifford.

The trilogy begins and ends with hangings on Thursday 13th August... 96 years apart.
Peter Anthony Allen

96 years of British judicial executions captured in 3 fascinating and factual volumes.

In 1868, railway porter Thomas Wells shot his stationmaster in the head. He was due to marry in August, but instead was hanged by William Calcraft and George Smith in the first private execution in the UK.

In 1964, Peter Anthony Allen & Gwynne Owen Evans battered and stabbed John Alan West to death in his own home, blamed each other and had to be kept apart in the dock after police told Allen that Evans was having an affair with his wife. They were the last people ever to be hanged in the UK, Allen by Robert Stewart and Harry Robinson, Evans by Harry Allen and Royston Rickard.

Gwynne Owen Evans

Steve Fielding meticulously traces the crimes which led to the punishment, notes the dates and places of over 1,000 executions, and details the personalities involved - the victims, the condemned men or women and, of course, the hangmen.

Each book has four indexes: victim, method, executioner and person hanged.
